A man was shot in the leg while lying in bed with a female companion, and he claims that his pet dog accidentally pulled the trigger.
Jerald Kirkwood, hailing from Memphis, Tennessee, was chatting and relaxing with an unnamed woman in his bedroom around 4 a.m. on Monday when his dog, Oreo, jumped onto the bed
.
The one-year-old pit bull was so eager to join them that he reportedly stepped on a gun that was on the floor, getting his paw caught in the trigger guard, which led to the firearm discharging.
Kirkwood was struck by the bullet, resulting in a grazing wound on his left thigh, and paramedics treated him at the scene.
He was subsequently transported to the hospital in stable condition for additional care.
Before the paramedics arrived, the woman reportedly left the scene, taking the gun with her.
“A freak accident occurred when the dog jumped up and caused the gun to go off,” stated a friend of the injured man.
The friend also emphasized that the pit bull is very friendly and reassured that Kirkwood is doing well.
According to a police report, when officers inquired about the weapon, Kirkwood mentioned that the woman took it when she departed.
A single shell casing was found at the location.
Authorities classified the event as an 'accidental injury.'
