A Zimbabwean man identified as Shupikai Chikuvira, 29, has reportedly committed suicide over a failed marriage proposal.
It was gathered that Chikuvira’s lifeless body was found dangling on a tree near a footpath in Mutawatawa moments after his girlfriend declined his marriage proposal.
Bulawayo 24 learnt that villagers called the police to the place.
Acting provincial police spokesperson for Mashonaland East, Inspector Tendai Mwanza confirmed the incident, adding that investigation was ongoing.
Tendai Mwanza said, “We are investigating the case of a man who hanged himself in Mutawatawa on August 4 after he allegedly had a misunderstanding with his lover.
“We urge people to exercise restraint and solve their misunderstandings amicably. It is, therefore, regrettable that a life was lost.”
The police said the deceased visited his girlfriend who was panning for gold along Mazowe River on August 4 and proposed to her.
He asked her to elope with him but she declined the proposal because her parents had not approved of their affair.
The police learnt that in rage, Chikuvira left the girl while threatening to commit suicide.
Moments later his lifeless body was found hanging from a tree along a pathway.
