The former Newcastle United striker says the Dutchman has failed to improve his side despite spending £250 million on new players

Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has criticised Louis van Gaal's Manchester United, saying the side have made no significant progress under the Dutchman since he first took over.

Van Gaal was appointed David Moyes' replacement in the summer of 2014, but despite a transfer outlay in the region of £250 million, the club could miss out on Champions League qualification this season.

Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Sunderland means speculation over Van Gaal's future will intensify, with Jose Mourinho being tipped to become United's next boss and Shearer joined the critics questioning the current man in the Old Trafford dugout.

"I don't think Man United are any further forward now to what they were when he [Van Gaal] took over," the 45-year-old told Match of the Day.

"I don't see any progression whatsoever despite them spending nearly £250 million.

"What will also be hugely alarming [for Van Gaal] is that there's so many newspaper outlets going on about Mourinho - not one person from the Man United hierarchy has come out and denied that. That must be very worrying."

United next take on Midtjylland in the Europa League round of 32 next Thursday after they bowed out of the Champions League group stages in December.
