The next-gen GranTurismo will be reportedly followed by a production version of the Alfieri Concept, which is expected to hit the market sometimes over the next couple of years.
Speaking with Drive, the Trident's engineer, Davide Danesi, has confirmed that the company is developing underpinnings for a new GranTurismo as well as the Alfieri-based machine, confirming that both sports cars will sit alongside each other, sharing the same platform, but targeting different customers.
"Today the architecture is shared between Ghibli, Quattroporte and Levante. With the Alfieri we think we need to make another step on the architecture so we're going to arrive at another more sporty architecture, with some common basis [with the Ghibli] but with development from there", Danesin said.
Maserati's new sports cars will both use aluminum to reduce weight and will be significantly lighter over the two sedans. The engine options remain in the dark zone for now, but the Alfieri could eventually gain the same range of twin-turbo V6 and V8 units from its siblings, along with the 8-speed automatic transmission, which could also be offered on the next GranTurismo.
The upcoming Maserati GranTurismo is expected to debut in Europe in 2017 and be followed by the Alfieri a year later.
