Maserati has confirmed that it will offer all of its future models with hybrid powertrains, except the Alfieri sports car.

The Italian company told Autocar that it simply has to add hybrid models to its range due to increasingly-strict emissions targets. As such, the Quattroporte, Ghibli, GranTurismo and GranCabrio will all be offered as plug-in hybrids by 2020.

According to the firm's European general manager Giulio Pastore “We've to do it - it’s that simple. In some countries where it is highly incentivised, they will be a success, in others maybe less so, however, there is government and customer demand for such cars. What I can say is that we will only electrify our cars if it can be done without sacrificing performance. If there’s a sacrifice, then we won’t do it.”

Maserati's first hybrid is likely to be the upcoming Levante SUV, a model absolutely critical to the future success of the company and its ambitious goal of hitting 75,000 annual units by 2018.
