The referee, 48-year-old César Flores, had shown the shooter a red card moments earlier and died from three shots to his head, chest and neck.

The match was abandoned and the injured player - Walter Zárate, 25 - was rushed to hospital, where he is reportedly no longer in a critical condition.

A police spokesman said: "It all happened during the match.

"We don't know what happened with the referee but the player was angry and went to get his gun and killed him."
