Alexei Ramirez put an end to Steven Matz’s Sunday with a single just inside the first-base line.
With that single, Ramirez also put an end to Matz’s bid for a no-hitter with one out in the eighth inning.
Matz, a lefthander from Long Island had struck out eight Padres, walked two and faced one batter more than the minimum Sunday.
MLB's no-hitters, perfect games
New York leads 2-0 on home runs by Wilmer Flores and Neil Walker off Clayton Richard.
Matz, who was 1-7 in his previous 13 starts, threw just over 100 pitches on a 96-degree day at Citi Field after tossing a career-high 120 on Tuesday night in a no-decision against Arizona.
The closest the Padres had come to a hit before Ramirez was Yangervis Solarte’s line drive right back to Matz with two outs in the fourth. Matz put up his glove and almost casually caught the ball before Solarte slammed down his bat in frustration.
The only Mets pitcher to throw a no-hitter was Johan Santana in June 2012 against St. Louis.
