The All4 system will be available from Spring

Mini has announced that it is to offer its All4 all-wheel-drive system on its Clubman estate model for the first time from this spring.

The new-generation Clubman – launched in the UK at the end of October – will also be the first four-wheel-drive car to be built at the company’s Plant Oxford factory.

The All4 system will be offered on two Clubman variants: the Cooper S Clubman and Cooper SD.

The Cooper S comes fitted with a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine producing 189bhp and mated to a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, or with an optional eight-speed automatic ‘box.

The Cooper SD, meanwhile, has a 187bhp diesel engine that comes with the automatic transmission as standard.

The electronically controlled all-wheel drive system distributes drive torque between the front and rear axles, depending on the road conditions and the levels of grip.

Mini says that this enables faster acceleration, increases agility when taking bends at speed and optimises driving stability in all weather and road conditions.

The all-wheel drive system is connected to the Driving Dynamics System (DSC), which continuously calculates the ideal power distribution between the front and rear wheels.

The DSC system also incorporates a number of other electronic safety features, including anti-lock brake system (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Cornering Brake Control (CBD), a braking and drive-off assistant, brake dry function and Fading Brake Support.

DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) can also be activated when the vehicle is setting off in loose sand or deep snow.

The latest version of the All4 all-wheel drive system – which has previously appeared on Countryman models – has been designed to be compact and lightweight, in order to help increase efficiency.

As a result, there is only a slight increase in fuel consumption and exhaust emissions, compared to the front-wheel-drive Clubman cars.

Production of Clubman All4 models has already started at Plant Oxford, with first deliveries to customers in April.

Prices for the Clubman Cooper S start at £24,305, and at £27,410 for the Clubman Cooper SD.
