Real Madrid were back at the Santiago Bemabeu for the first time since winning the Champions League last May and beat French Ligue 2 side Stade de Reims 5-3 on Tuesday night.
In a repeat of their first European Cup final back in 1956, Madrid prevailed in a 5-3 victory to win the annual Trofeo Santiago Bernabeu and head into their Liga debut away to Real Sociedad on Sunday with confidence after losing only once in pre-season (to Paris Saint-Germain) and claiming the UEFA Super Cup last week in Norway.
Here, Goal looks at the major talking points from the Bernabeu clash as Zinedine Zidane gave a run out to almost all of his squad, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe still missing...
ASENSIO SHINES ON HOME DEBUT
Marco Asensio is the man of the moment. The former Mallorca midfielder hit a stunning strike on his official debut last week in the UEFA Super Cup as Madrid beat Sevilla in extra time to claim the European trophy and he was officially unveiled at the Bernabeu on Tuesday before making his home debut in this match.
The 20-year-old impressed in front of the Bernabeu crowd and was given generous applause following a fine run early on in the game. Asensio started on the left, but switched sides effectively with Gareth Bale, picked out his team-mates with superb skill and vision and looks like being an important player in this team over the course of the next few months - especially with Ronaldo and Benzema both out at the moment.
Zinedine Zidane praised the player after the match and said: "He knows exactly what I want from him."
BALE BRIGHT ON RETURN TO THE TEAM
Bale made his return to the team after an extended summer break due to his participation in Euro 2016 and the Welsh winger looked both bright and also fit in his 63 minutes on the pitch.
Out on the right, the 27-year-old linked up well with Asensio and Alvaro Morata and sent some dangerous balls into the box, switching sides as he got up and down the pitch and always looked a threat in the air.
With Ronaldo and Benzema out, Bale is perhaps even more important than usual and he looks ready to feature from the start against Real Sociedad at Anoeta at the weekend.
DEFENCE STILL LEAKING TOO MANY GOALS
It was an impressive attacking performance from Madrid, but there are still some concerns at the other end of the pitch.
Nacho and Sergio Ramos got forward to score a goal apiece and Danilo showed signs of being a much-improved player in what will be his second season at the club, but to concede three goals against a second-tier French side is somewhat worrying for Zidane and the coach admitted afterwards that there are still things that can be improved before the start of La Liga on Sunday.
However, the Frenchman explained that his priority was to give a run-out to as many players as possible on Tuesday and claimed he was happy with the performance. Time will tell.
MORATA OFF THE MARK SECOND TIME AROUND
Morata was unveiled as a Real Madrid player on Monday after returning to the club this summer following two seasons at Juventus.
And after his presentation at the Santiago Bernabeu, the Spain striker was asked in the press conference if he was concerned by his failure to score in pre-season and again against Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup last week, when he often cut an isolated figure up front.
He said, as Zidane has, that the goals will come and the first one in his second spell duly arrived in this match as he headed home the third. The relief was tangible as he punched the air and clenched his fist. It will do his confidence no harm at all.
NACHO DESERVES MORE CHANCES THIS SEASON
Nacho is a popular player among Real Madrid fans and he beat the badge in delight after heading home his side's first goal of the night.
The homegrown defender had looked set to leave for Roma in the summer, but coach Zidane ruled out a move for the versatile centre-back and he impressed in this match with some superb tackles.
Still at the club and desperate to succeed here, he deserves more chances this term and he may get them as Pepe starts the season on the sidelines.
