A devastating road incident in Lagos State has tragically resulted in the deaths of a mother and her child. The fatalities occurred after two heavily loaded container trucks overturned at Mile 2, specifically near Freeman Market, on the route leading into Apapa.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the tragic event through a statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq. The statement detailed that the victims became trapped beneath the massive overturned trucks and their containerised cargo, sustaining injuries that proved fatal.

Emergency Response and Recovery Efforts

LASTMA's dedicated rescue and recovery teams swiftly mobilised to the scene of the accident. They immediately cordoned off the affected section of the road and implemented diversions for motorists through an adjacent service lane. These measures were crucial to prevent further incidents and to alleviate the inevitable traffic congestion caused by the overturned vehicles.

To facilitate the clearance operation, the agency deployed a crane and a high-capacity tow vehicle to remove the massive trucks and their containers. Officers from the Nigeria Police Force were also on hand to provide essential security throughout the recovery process. Following the complex operation, the remains of the deceased were transported to the Police Mortuary in Yaba for appropriate procedures.

Call for Investigation and Road Safety

Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, expressed profound sadness over the incident and extended his deepest condolences to the grieving family. He has called upon all relevant security agencies to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the crash to determine both its immediate and underlying causes.

Bakare-Oki emphasised that the investigation should meticulously examine various factors, including the possibility of mechanical defects in the vehicles, issues of overloading, improper distribution of cargo, or potential driver negligence, among other contributing elements. He strongly urged operators of articulated vehicles to ensure their trucks are consistently roadworthy, that all cargoes are securely fastened, and that they strictly adhere to established road safety regulations.

The LASTMA boss further advised all motorists, particularly commercial truck drivers, to exercise extreme caution and to always prioritise the safety of other road users. He reiterated that regular mechanical inspections, proper cargo handling, and responsible driving practices are indispensable in preventing avoidable road crashes and the tragic fatalities that often accompany them in Lagos State.
