MultiChoice, the prominent African pay-television broadcaster, has confirmed the discontinuation of its GOtv Stream mobile application, a service that permitted subscribers to access selected GOtv channels directly on their mobile phones and tablets. This latest closure follows the earlier shutdown of its Showmax streaming platform, signalling a significant strategic re-evaluation of its digital offerings under new ownership.

A statement published on the official GOtv Stream website confirmed the cessation of the service, directing existing customers back to their conventional television decoders for continued viewing. The message explicitly stated: "GOtv Stream has been discontinued. You can continue enjoying the channels included in your active GOtv package on your GOtv decoder."

The application has also been removed from both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, with app-tracking data from Chrome Stats indicating its removal from the Android platform as early as 21st October. Prior to its closure, GOtv Stream offered subscribers the convenience of accessing live television channels, catch-up programmes, and offline downloads, all contingent on their specific subscription packages. MultiChoice has not yet provided a specific rationale for this particular shutdown, nor has it announced an immediate replacement mobile service for its subscribers in Nigeria and other markets.

Strategic Shift Follows Canal+ Acquisition

GOtv Stream, initially launched in Nigeria on 1st December 2023, was designed to extend MultiChoice's content accessibility beyond traditional living room viewing. Its discontinuation marks the latest in a series of transformations within the company's digital operations since the French media conglomerate, Canal+, assumed full control.

Canal+ announced on 22nd September 2025 that its acquisition of MultiChoice had become unconditional, having secured all necessary regulatory approvals. This transaction, valued at approximately $2 billion, integrated the African pay-TV operator into a combined entity that now serves over 40 million subscribers across nearly 70 countries globally. This move is part of a broader industry trend where media companies are consolidating their assets and streamlining operations to enhance efficiency and competitiveness.

Earlier in March 2026, MultiChoice had already revealed plans to cease operations of its then-streaming platform, Showmax. The decision was attributed to substantial annual losses and an imperative for stricter financial discipline. Showmax subsequently ceased functioning in April 2026, with affected subscribers advised to transition to DStv Stream for uninterrupted access to content.

Future Streaming Ambitions And Package Revisions

In October, MultiChoice Nigeria Chief Executive Officer, Kemi Omotosho, addressed the company's evolving streaming strategy during a press briefing in Lagos. She indicated that the company was actively assessing its options, stating, "We do not want to have too many technologies in the platform, so we are doing an audit of what is the best streaming platform to launch." Omotosho's remarks suggest that MultiChoice has not abandoned its aspirations in the streaming sector and plans to introduce a new product once the optimal technology and platform are identified.

Concurrently with these changes in its streaming portfolio, MultiChoice has also revamped its DStv and GOtv package structures. Effective 5th November, GOtv subscribers can now select from four distinct packages: Easy at ₦4,000 monthly, Starter at ₦6,000, Select at ₦11,000, and Sports at ₦21,000. Similarly, DStv customers have been presented with revised options, with monthly subscriptions ranging from the Starter package at ₦6,000 to the Premium package at ₦44,500.
