ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has a new leader following the election of Mustapha Abdullahi as its President. Abdullahi emerged victorious in Thursday's election held in Abuja, defeating prominent figures in Nigerian basketball, including former D’Tigers captain Olumide Oyedeji and ex-International Ejike Ugboaja.

Election Results Usher In New Era

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Abdullahi secured a decisive victory, polling 48 votes. His closest contender, Olumide Oyedeji, managed to garner eight votes, while Ejike Ugboaja regrettably failed to secure any votes in the contest. This outcome marks a significant transition for the federation, with Abdullahi succeeding the outgoing President, Musa Kida, at a pivotal moment for the sport in the country.

In a related development, Ugo Udezue was elected unopposed as the NBBF Vice President, having been the sole candidate to vie for that position. His emergence ensures a stable leadership structure alongside the new President.

Addressing Challenges and Fostering Growth

The recent election heralds a new phase of leadership for Nigerian basketball. The incoming board is expected to proactively address a range of critical challenges that have impacted the sport’s development and administration. Key areas of focus will include:

  • Enhancing domestic competitions to boost local talent.
  • Investing in grassroots development programmes to identify and nurture young players.
  • Improving players’ welfare, including financial support and medical provisions.
  • Securing consistent funding to support the federation's activities.
  • Strengthening the overall basketball infrastructure and administrative structures across Nigeria.

Mustapha Abdullahi, who also serves as the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, takes the helm of the NBBF at a crucial juncture. His appointment follows the recent international successes achieved by the national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress. These achievements have amplified calls for more robust domestic structures to sustain and further advance basketball development at home.

Future Aspirations for Nigerian Basketball

The new administration is tasked with building upon these recent successes and ensuring that the momentum generated is channelled into creating more opportunities for players at all levels. Expectations are high that the new leadership will focus on improving the competitiveness of domestic basketball leagues and programmes, thereby providing a stronger foundation for national teams and inspiring future generations of athletes. This strategic direction aims to cement Nigeria's position as a dominant force in African basketball and enhance its presence on the global stage.
