Graham Carey netted an extra-time penalty to secure an FA Cup third round trip to Liverpool for Plymouth Argyle.
The League Two outfit wasted a host of chances against Newport County in their second round replay before the midfielder stepped up to convert from 12 yards.
Poor finishing let both sides down, but Plymouth had a golden chance to take the lead in extra-time as substitute Paul Garita hit the post from the penalty spot.
But the Pilgrims made no mistake when they were awarded their second spot-kick of the night as Carey slammed past Newport goalkeeper Joe Day.
Derek Adams's side will now travel to Anfield on January 8 as they look to pull off a shock against the Reds.
