It is no secret that a new Q5 is in the works with the latest BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC in its sights.

In recent months, a range of prototypes have been spied testing however,, as is typically the case, heavy camouflage has disguised the car's updated styling. It's fortunate then that Theophilus Chin got out his X-ray glasses and rendered how the new car may look based on the test mules we've come across recently.

It's obvious that the new Q5's design will be inspired by that of the latest-generation Q7. That means that, compared to the outgoing model, it'll be adorned with sharper edges, straighter lines and and overall more aggressive design. That will particularly set it apart from the Mercedes GLC which, as with all current Mercs, favours curves over pronounced, uninterrupted straight body lines.

The second-gen Q5 will be underpinned by the MQB modular architecture of the Volkswagen Group. The car is also tipped to receive suspension parts from the Porsche Macan and, thanks to its lighter construction, should weigh as much as 220 pounds (110 kg) less than the current car.

Engines on the cards include a 2.0-liter turbo diesel, 2.0-liter petrol and the turbocharged 2.5-liter 5-cylinder of the RS3 Sportback in RS Q5 guise.
