The federal authorities has dismissed report that Nigeria attended the opening of the United States embassy in disputed Jerusalem on Monday.
A overseas medium Al Jazeera had listed Nigeria as one of many international locations represented on the occasion.
But the Nigerian authorities has written to the medium, demanding a retraction of its story, based on a source within the Presidency.
It was gathered that the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, queried the Nigerian Ambassador to Israel to elucidate his presence on the occasion.
“Based on that report, the minister queried the ambassador to explain why he attended the event,” the source mentioned.
“The ambassador has since replied that he was not on the occasion.
“It was on the strength of the ambassador’s response that the Federal Government wrote to Al Jazeera to retract its story.”
The United States formally relocated its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, in a deeply controversial transfer that angered Palestinians and drew widespread international condemnation.
The ceremony passed off amid street closures and heavy police presence in anticipation of Palestinian protests.
