The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has announced its proactive engagement in developing a legislative proposal aimed at establishing a structured salary framework for journalists. This initiative seeks to ensure media professionals receive appropriate compensation for their crucial role in upholding democracy within the nation.

During the fourth annual "Milestone Recognition of Media Icons in Nigeria" event held on Saturday, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, the National President of the NUJ, stated that this endeavour is designed to foster media advancement, professional excellence, and enhance the welfare of journalists. He lamented the current state of the profession, noting that despite its significant contributions to sustaining democracy in Nigeria, media workers continue to grapple with inadequate remuneration.

Comrade Yahya articulated the union's commitment to dialogue, declaring, "NUJ is open for discussion. This time around we are integrating and involving all professional bodies who are working to see that we come with an initiative to a bill that will be presented before the National Assembly for ratification and at the same time to change the narrative." This collaborative approach underscores the union's determination to effect meaningful change.

Appeal To President Tinubu For Intervention

The NUJ President also directed a heartfelt appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging his intervention in the persistent issue of poor pay for Nigerian journalists. Yahya drew a parallel with other public sector workers, asking, "If the President can approve and increase salary structure for judicial workers, why not journalists? The time is now. Let’s see how we can partner together so that at the end of the day we can be able to smile together."

The "Annual Milestone Recognition of Media Icons in Nigeria" event itself was meticulously organised to celebrate exceptional achievements within the media industry. It aimed to acknowledge the courage, professionalism, sacrifices, and unwavering dedication of individuals who have distinguished themselves in the pursuit of truth, public enlightenment, and national progress. This year’s honourees included notable figures such as Martins Oloja, Sumner Shagari Sambo, Tabutha Sani Kangiwa, Chief Eric Teniola, Segun Adeniyi, Azubuike Ishiekwene, Comrade Franz Ndulue, Kingsley Datubor Uranta, and Adetoro Oladapo, among others.

Democracy And Journalism: An Inseparable Link

Speaking at the event, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State underscored the intrinsic connection between democracy and a free press. He emphasised that a functioning democracy relies on citizens having unimpeded access to credible information, the liberty to articulate their opinions, and the opportunity to hold public officials accountableβ€”all functions facilitated by robust journalism. "A free press gives citizens a voice, brings their concerns to public attention, and ensures that those in authority are answerable for their actions. This accurate reporting and informed debate, responsible journalism, also helps citizens understand public issues and make sound decisions. Democracy and journalism, therefore, depends on each other," Governor Oborevwori asserted.

He further stressed that the sacrifices made by journalists in helping to restore democracy to Nigeria must never be forgotten. "They remind us that the press freedom we enjoy today was secured through courage, commitment, and personal sacrifice. Our constitution recognises this responsibility," he added.

Christopher Isiguzo, the immediate past President of the NUJ, cautioned media practitioners against succumbing to any attempts to manipulate information for political gain. He urged unwavering allegiance to truth, public interest, and the stability of Nigeria's democracy. Isiguzo concluded by stating: "In an age of social media and instant communication, professional journalism is more important than ever. The pressure to be first must never replace the obligation to be accurate."
