A Nigerian man, Christopher Omoike, 36, jumped to his death in Johannesburg, South Africa, while trying to evade arrest by the police.
Channels TV reported that the man had jumped from his apartment located on the 9th floor after his Nigerian babymama lodged a complaint about him.
Consul General representing Nigeria in Johannesburg, Godwin Adama, said the police invited him to the scene of the incident, an invitation he granted.
On Adama’s account, he was informed that the 36-year-old Nigerian man had commited suicide.
But, when he arrived at the apartment, he found out that the deceased has been very worried because he was having some problems with the Nigerian lady he shares a baby with.
Adama said, “He had seized the lady’s phone but later that night, they met and she was struggling to get back the phone. He beat her with a bottle or whatever.
“On the basis of this, the roommate, Oscar, in his testimony, said he took her to the police station to make a report that she was battered and was bleeding.”
The Consul General added that she reported the incident to the police.
Adama stated that according to Omoike’s South African girlfriend, the 36-year-old had vowed to kill himself if the police comes.
He said he was invited by the police to note that they didn’t take any action other than the invitation they received by his fellow Nigerian, that would have led him to jump to his death.
Adama also stated that the police were carrying an out autopsy to officially state the cause of his death, “after which the Independent Police Investigation Directorate will hand over the case to another department for further investigation.”
