Fiat revealed the US-spec version of the Abarth 124 Spider in New York which sadly, not only features way fewer scorpion badges, but 10 fewer horses as well than its European stablemate.

That’s because Abarth is marketed as a brand on its own in Europe, which gives the customers there all the ‘angry’ scorpion badging they wished for instead for the plain Fiat shield.

Powered by the same turbocharged 160hp 1.4-litre MultiAir petrol unit as the regular 124 Spider, the Eloborazione Abarth will be available with a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox with paddle shifters. Fiat says that this combination gives it one of the best power-to-weight ratios in the segment, with Euro models tipping the scales at 1,060kg.

Other new features include a new Sport driving mode, a mechanical limited-slip differential, a different suspension setup with mono-tube Bilstein front and rear shock absorbers and bigger brakes from Brembo.

Sales of the regular Fiat 124 Spider are expected to start during the summer, with the Abarth version to follow on a later date.
