Noah Syndergaard’s removal after the sixth inning of Wednesday’s game against the Royals appeared to be nothing more than one half of a double-switch at the time. But it could result in something more serious for the Mets.
Syndergaard told manager Terry Collins he felt minor discomfort in his right elbow after throwing six innings, allowing three runs and eight hits on 91 pitches in the Mets’ 4-3 victory over the Royals at Citi Field. Collins removed him from the game and Syndergaard left with Yoenis Cespedes, who felt left wrist discomfort, to see Dr. David Altchek.
Both left before postgame media availability.
Catcher Rene Rivera said he had no idea Syndergaard (8-2) was feeling discomfort until he was told. Syndergaard also had the elbow looked at after a May 2 start against the Giants.
The media found out about Syndergaard’s injury at the conclusion of the postgame news conference, in which Collins only mentioned the injury after a team employee suggested the manager do so. Collins left immediately after saying Syndergaard is seeing the team doctor “because his elbow flared up on him.”
