North Korea leader, Kim Jong Un

North Korea is to hold local elections in July, the first time since leader, Kim Jung Un, took power following his father’s death in 2011.

Polls for an unspecified number of positions at provincial, city and county levels are scheduled for July 19, the state-run Korean Central News Agency said Monday.

Local elections are held every four years in the isolated communist country but their results are considered a foregone conclusion.

In 2011, voters were given the option of voting yes or no for a single party-appointed candidate in each constituency.
