According to BMW Blog, the next-generation 5-Series will be available with two plug-in hybrid models, dubbed the 530e and 540e respectively.

Both are expected to use technology similar to that from the 330e, albeit modified to suit the increased sized of the 5-Series.

As the names imply, the 530e will be the entry-level variant. It will come with a four-cylinder engine mated to an electric motor for a total output of 280 hp. In electric mode, it will have a 35 km range and a 120 km/h (75 mph) top speed.

Concerning the 540e, it'll be powered by a twin-turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with 258 hp and 400 Nm of torque and an electric motor with 95 hp and 250 Nm.

The battery of both cars will be found under the rear seats, and during braking and periods of inertia while driving kinetic energy will help recharge it.

Both models are expected to come standard with a 9-speed automatic transmission, wireless charging functionality and the option of rear- and all-wheel drive.
