The Premier League has had its fair share of excellent forwards since its inception. But some of the best to ever grace the division have also blown a great deal of chances to score.

Below are the 10 players who have missed the biggest number of opportunities in the top flight.

If at first you don't succeed...

10. Emannuel Adebayor/Jermain Defoe

Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe are tied in this category, having missed a combined total of 106 chances in the English top flight.

The latter could possibly increase his tally as he's still a member of a Premier League squad with Bournemouth. But, for now, the former Spurs teammates are locked on 53 each.

9. Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney is England's highest-ever scorer, as well as Manchester United's highest-ever scorer. The Englishman registered an incredible 208 goals and 103 assists during his time in the Premier League, but also missed 54 big chances, which isn't that bad, considering.

8. Daniel Sturridge

Daniel Sturridge has missed many games through injury, and he has also missed many big chances, having failed to scored on 57 occasions when presented a great opportunity.

The Liverpool forward, though, found the back of the net less than 30 seconds after coming on as a substitute against West Ham in the Reds' first game of this season and he will be hoping he can remain as prolific and injury free the rest of the campaign.

7. Theo Walcott

The Everton forward was on target for his side against Bournemouth on the weekend, but he's missed a fair amount of chances over the course of his Premier League career. Walcott, who spent 12 years at Arsenal before moving to Goodison Park in January, has missed a total 66 big chances.

6. Harry Kane

Harry Kane has missed two huge chances already this season, having played two matches at the time of writing. Of course, he's arguably the best centre-forward in Europe at the moment, but he has missed 70 big chances since bursting out onto the scene.

5. Olivier Giroud

Olivier Giroud led the line for France during this year's World Cup but didn't score a single goal. While he won't be remembered as one of the league's most prolific scorers, he has had a very decent career in England, having first played for Arsenal before moving to Chelsea in January.

Giroud has missed a total of 71 convertible chances, six less than the number of goals he's registered in his 194 appearances in the top flight.

4. Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku has been one of the most effective strikers since he arrived in the Premier League, well if you overlook the time he spent in a Chelsea uniform.

The Belgian hitman has scored 102 goals and assisted 35 more in 222 league appearances. But he has also thrown 73 chances he should have scored from.

3. Christian Benteke

While most of the strikers on this list can get a pass for their misses, Christian Benteke would have a harder time convincing folks to let him slide. The Belgian has failed to put away 74 big chances and hasn't been quite himself since he left Aston Villa for Liverpool.

2. Robin van Persie

Robin van Persie missed 80 big chances during his Premier League days. The Dutch forward, now at Feyenoord, arrived in England as an Arsenal player and his scoring exploits saw Manchester United move for him in 2012. One could argue that they wouldn't have won the Premier League title without his Golden Boot-winning 26 goals that season.

1. Sergio Aguero

A bit of a surprise here actually. Sergio Aguero is one the Premier League's most potent scorers and has been for a long time. Currently, the Argentinian is ranked 10th on the top flight's all-time scoring list and is tied with Teddy Sheringham with 146 goals.

He's also just three goals behind Les Ferdinand and four adrift of Michael Owen, so it's more than likely that he passes them both this season.

Shockingly, though, Aguero has missed 105 big chances since arriving in the Premier League. But he's still Manchester City's highest-ever scorer and the goal he scored to win them their first league title in 44 years does make up for all of the misses.
