The Selecao's failure to win Olympic football gold in 12 attempts will serve as inspiration to the Bayern Munich forward in Rio de Janeiro next month
Douglas Costa wants to make history with Brazil by winning his country's maiden Olympic football gold medal next month.
The Bayern Munich winger has been named as one of Brazil's three overage players - alongside Neymar and Fernando Prass - for the 2016 Olympic Games, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro.
The Olympics are Brazil's second chance for glory on home soil in the space of three years after their 2014 World Cup campaign ended in an embarrassing 7-1 defeat to eventual champions Germany, but Costa insists that recent history won't concern Rogerio Micale's men.
Brazil's record of three silver and two bronze medals, however, is another thing.
"Brazil has already won the World Cup many times," Costa told Goal Australia.
"The most important thing is to win the Olympic Games that we have never won and that would be a historical day for Brazil."
At the 2012 Olympics in London, Brazil lost the men's football final 2-1 to Mexico.
Costa will play at the Olympics after injury cost him a spot in Brazil's Copa America squad, and the 25-year-old can't wait to join up with Micale's squad ahead of the host nation's opening match against South Africa on August 4.
"I feel very good. I work so hard for these moments, so I feel amazing," he said.
Brazil have also been drawn with Iraq and Denmark in Group A.
