A truck, fully loaded with building blocks, skidded off the road and ran into the Ojutu River in Ilobu, Irepodun Local Government Area of Osun State.
Eye witnesses said, “the vehicle was coming from Okinni and heading to Ilorin to deliver the blocks to the owner.
“But it suddenly lost its break as the driver equally lost control before it finally landed in the river
“We have been here since morning to ensure that the driver is removed from the river as two persons have already being successfully rescued alive.”
The Divisional Police Officer, Ilobu Divisional Headquarters, SP Adekunle Obabusayo, who confirmed the incident, stated the ugly incidence occurred about 12:45pm when he just heard a very loud voice of people crying and wailing painfully at the scene of the incident and he quickly mobilized his men to the venue for rescue mission.
He said; “I rushed out with the aim that it was an ordinary noise or accident, but when I got to the scene, I saw a very large crowd wailing and screaming for help all over the bridge and I therefore made a swift intervention by mobilizing officers to the scene.
“We tried our efforts with the support of good Nigerians to rescue two persons out of the three victims.
The boys rescued are AbdulAfeez Olawuwo, 23 years old, a native of Baale's compound Okinni and AbdulRauf AbdulKareem, 24 years old, a native of Jagun's compound, Okinni.
“The duo were quickly rushed to the hospital for treatment and we have ensured that they were properly treated and discharged and as I am talking to you they have been released to their families.
“The identity of the driver is yet unknown as we are putting up efforts to know both the identity of the driver and the vehicle”, DPO explained.
Mr. Obabusayo Further confirmed that the vehicle ran into the river due to break failure.
“We learned that the vehicle was heading to Ilorin before the ugly incidence occurred,” he stated.
He lamented over what he described as an act of disobedience and being adamant to the constant warning always given to the people most especially drivers plying through Osogbo/Ilobu road to always be cautious of the narrow bridge.
The DOP however admonished the road users especially motorists to always take precautionary measures by ensuring that their vehicles are in good condition before they leave homes and always obey all the traffic rules and regulations.
“The road users such as pedestrians, drivers and other should always be patient while on the road because if all these are championed there would be minimum or no accident occurrence on our roads.
Meanwhile, the dead body of the driver previously handed over to the police has been deposited at an undisclosed mortuary.
The incident caused a hectic traffic logjam along the road that lasted for about seven hours.
