Divock Origi believes Liverpool delivered a snapshot of how much they have progressed as a group and just what they’re capable of in the 4-0 International Champions Cup victory over Barcelona.
The Reds scorched the La Liga champions in a counterattacking masterclass at a sold-out Wembley on Saturday, with the Belgian striker on the scoresheet again.
Origi netted his side’s third, collecting a perfectly weighted through pass from Kevin Stewart, who dispossessed Sergio Busquets, before applying the finish touch.
As the 21-year-old celebrated, Lionel Messi looked disbelieving at the scoreboard, which relayed that the Reds had breached Barcelona’s defence three times in just under 50 minutes.
And while the Argentine was shocked, Origi explained the performance was simply the implementation of what Liverpool have been fine-tuning during pre-season.
“This game was about showing ourselves: showing how much we’ve developed, showing that we want to learn, showing that we want to execute our plan,” he told Goal.
“We worked a lot on this and it has been paying off, which makes us very happy and shows that it’s worth it.
“It was great scoring against Barcelona. I said before the game that we had a great chance to win even though we knew it would be a difficult game against top opponents.
“We have to remember it’s only pre-season, but this is also a good thing for us and our development.
“We just have to keep on working and try to carry the qualities we showed going forward.”
