Benue state governor Samuel Ortom has said he prefers to lose next year’s governorship election than win it through violence.

Ortom, who defected from the All Progressives Congress, the party in charge of the federal government, to the Peoples Democratic Party in July, urged politicians in the state to eschew violence in the buildup to the 2019 polls.

He was speaking at St Vincent De Paul Quasi Parish, Aliade, near Makurdi, during a funeral mass for late Emmanuel Ayargwer, a retired magistrate.

Ortom said it was unnecessary to spill blood for any office because power belongs to God, who gives it to whomever He wills.

He prayed God to grant the deceased eternal rest and the bereaved family the fortitude to bear the loss.
