The former Marseilla man has become a popular figure at Upton Park, with fans chanting "he's better than Zidane" - a compliment he is grateful for but does not agree with
West Ham playmaker Dimitri Payet has thanked the club's supporters for likening him to Zinidine Zidane, yet insists the France legend is still above him.
The 28-year-old has dazzled for the Hammers since joining from Marseille last summer, hitting nine goals in 26 matches in all competitions.
A string of impressive performances has seen Payet become a popular figure at Upton Park, with supporters regularly chanting "he's better than Zidane" - a compliment Payet is grateful for but does not agree with.
"Of course I love the song and the supporters sing it all the time when we play home and away," he told the club's official website when asked about being compared to the Real Madrid boss.
"In terms of the comparison with Zidane that is the fans' opinion, but I feel he is still above me!"
Payet has recieved acclaim from neutrals and pundits alike for his attacking flair and impact upon a side who sit sixth in the league, just four points off the Champions League places.
His performances have led many to hail him as the signing of the season, yet the modest Payet - while thankful for the praise - highlighted another player more deserving of that tag.
"It is very nice to hear that people have said that about me," he said. "I am happy with how I have performed this season and how the team are doing so far.
"But I would say there are other players such as [N'Golo] Kante, who arrived from Ligue 1 and has had an incredible season in Leicester's rise to the top of the table. A lot of that is down to him."
Despite praising the Foxes' superb season, Payet feels Wednesday night's opponents Tottenham Hotspur can win the Premier League title this term.
"They have become title challengers this season and Leicester have taken all the attention by being top of the league," Payet said.
"But Tottenham have also played well and we saw them beat Manchester City the other week.
"They are only two points behind Leicester so I think they have a squad good enough to win the league this season."
