The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has moved to dispel circulating reports suggesting plans to impose a membership levy across the country to fund its activities ahead of the 2027 general elections. Comrade Ini Ememobong, the party's National Publicity Secretary, clarified over the weekend that the PDP is undergoing a comprehensive "rebirth process," emphasizing a return to its grassroots funding model based on voluntary contributions rather than mandatory fees.
Rebirth and Refocus: The PDP's Strategic Shift
Ememobong likened the party's journey to a curve, stating, "Life is a curve; you go from the bottom to the apex and back down again. We started from zero in 1998, ruled for 16 years, and then began a descent. We have reached the bottom of the valley, and now we are heading back up. This is a rebirth process, which is always painful. We are analyzing our mistakes and successes." This introspective approach signals a significant strategic shift aimed at rebuilding trust and engagement with its base. The core strategy, he reiterated, is straightforward: "go back to the people. When the people are with you voluntarily, they fund the cause. In 1998, people made small contributions to fund the party, and that gave them a voice."
Overcoming Challenges: Factionalism and Rebuilding Efforts
Once a dominant political force, the PDP experienced considerable setbacks last year, losing numerous key figures, including many state governors who traditionally serve as state-level party leaders. From commanding over ten governorships in 2025, the PDP now holds only Adamawa, Bauchi, Oyo, and Zamfara states. Further compounding its challenges, other prominent party leaders, including Senators and members of the House of Representatives, have defected. This exodus has been largely fueled by internal factionalism, notably driven by those loyal to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, who are reportedly working towards the re-election of President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Voluntary Support: The Path Forward for the PDP
In his Sunday statement, Ememobong firmly denied reports of any imposed levy, reaffirming the party’s commitment to "voluntary contributions, irrespective of amount, as a legitimate and time-tested model of grassroots political funding." He clarified that any reference to a N10,000 contribution was purely illustrative, intended to demonstrate the collective power of voluntary support, and "not a directive, levy, or mandatory contribution." Ememobong categorically stated, "there is no fixed amount, no compulsory payment, and no obligation imposed on any member of the PDP." He urged all members and the public to disregard misleading headlines and continue their support for the party at all levels in ways they deem appropriate and convenient, stressing that this approach is central to the party's renewed focus on the people of Nigeria.
