The former France international believes the long-time Gunners boss should open the door for one of his former proteges to take over the reins at the end of the campaign
Emmanuel Petit has urged Arsene Wenger to resign as Arsenal manager at the end of the season and pave the way for one of his former players to replace him at the helm.
Wenger is facing calls from the club's supporters to end his lengthy association with the Gunners this summer after seeing his side slip out of the Premier League title race.
Arsenal were also dumped out of the FA Cup by Watford at the weekend and are likely to bow out of the Champions League as they look to reverse a 2-0 deficit against Barcelona at the Camp Nou on Wednesday.
And Petit, who was signed by Wenger from Monaco in 1998, believes his compatriot should step aside to allow one of his ex-charges to take over the reins.
“I am pretty sure he has to stay at the club but maybe it's time for him to open the door for something else as well,” said Petit.
“When I look at the former players from Arsenal, how many of them have their badges to manage a team?
“Dennis Bergkamp, Tony Adams, Patrick Vieira, many, many great players, they have their own statue in front of the stadium. I think Arsene... it's good to share the place with someone else and try to open the door to the former players.”
