Thursday's match between Germany and France beckons a new era of international football. The UEFA Nations League is a new tournament, designed to generate more competitive international fixtures in years where are there no major tournaments.
This means that if you were a big fan of those friendlies where England would take on Norway in a half-full Wembley Stadium, well my friend, you're out of luck.
And what better way to kick off the Nations League than with one of the biggest grudge matches in international football. The 2018 World Cup winners France travel to the Allianz Arena to take on the 2014 champions Germany.
To celebrate, we've created a combined XI of the best current Germany and France players.
1. GK: Hugo Lloris
The idea of leaving Manuel Neuer out of any combined XI would have been unthinkable a few years ago. However, the Bayern Munich goalkeeper had a season blighted by injury in which he made just three Bundesliga appearances, and then he had a horror show at the World Cup.
Therefore, Hugo Lloris appears the safer bet in net. Lloris was one of the stand out goalkeepers during the World Cup, second only to Thibaut Courtois. His leadership qualities also make him a valuable addition to the side.
2. RB: Benjamin Pavard
Benjamin Pavard was one of the surprise packages of the 2018 World Cup. The 22-year-old was playing in the German second tier just two seasons ago, but now he is a versatile right back, who is sublime in both attack and defence. His goal against Argentina in the last 16 was enough to get him in this team on its own.
Sadly, this means we've had to leave out Joshua Kimmich. Although Kimmich is very strong for Bayern Munich, for the German national team he often leaves them exposed at the back as he drifts too far forward. Therefore, Pavard gets the nod.
3. CB: Raphael Varane
This was an easy selection. Raphael Varane had a masterclass of a World Cup, proving that he is one of the game's premier centre backs, if not the best in the world.
He is blessed with both pace as well as a fine ability to read the game. Varane has already won four Champions Leagues and a World Cup, and the Frenchman is still only 25. He easily walks into this combined XI.
4. CB: Mats Hummels
I know, I know, Mats Hummels had a poor World Cup, but that can't discount a whole career at the top. The Bayern Munich defender is still a world class centre back who is both big and strong but also confident on the ball, and adds some much needed experience to what is a very junior backline.
Unfortunately, this means Samuel Umtiti misses out. The Barcelona defender is very strong and a notable threat from set pieces, but is prone to the odd moment of madness in defence, making him less consistent. Therefore, Hummels gets in the team.
5. LB: Lucas Hernandez
Lucas Hernandez was one of the unsung heroes of France's World Cup triumph. Like Pavard, the 22-year-old Atletico Madrid defender was resolute in defence but also offered a lot going forward when needed.
Hernandez's selection means that Jonas Hector misses out. Again, like Kimmich, Hector was far too rash going forward, meaning that throughout most of the World Cup, Germany were playing with a back two.
6. CM: N'Golo Kante
What can we say about N'Golo Kante that hasn't already been said before? His stamina and tackling ability are unrivalled and he is an asset to any team he is part of. The Chelsea star's pressing ability is so important in the modern game, but he can also play a more static role sitting in front of the defence.
Ilkay Gundogan is a fine midfielder, but he simply isn't in the same class as two-time Premier League winner Kante.
7. CM: Toni Kroos
The only highlight of Germany's World Cup campaign was Toni Kroos' spellbinding free kick in the last minute of the Sweden match. Sure, it only kept Germany's World Cup dreams alive for another four days, but what a moment it was.
Kroos has been a key performer for a Real Madrid side that has won three consecutive Champions Leagues, and won the World Cup in 2014 with his national side.
The prospect of Kroos playing alongside Kante is mouth-watering, so therefore we must get the 28-year-old German in the team.
8. CM: Paul Pogba
The curious case of Paul Pogba: so fantastic during the World Cup, and yet so underwhelming when he plays for Manchester United. At his best, Pogba is an imperious sight in midfield, and in this combined XI he'd play in a more attacking role, allowing him to unleash his powerful long-range shots and his deft passing.
Yes, Garth Crooks, he may dye his hair and likes to partake in a dab, but if he is at his best then there is no way he's missing out on this combined XI.
9. RW: Kylian Mbappe
On the right side of the front three, is the wonderkid himself, Kylian Mbappe. His speed and fearlessness frighten every defender he comes up against when the 19-year-old charges towards them.
Mbappe has already earned comparisons with greats of the past such as Thierry Henry and Pele. Whether the Frenchmen will be able reach similar heights remains to be seen, but for now, he's getting in the combined XI.
10. CF: Thomas Muller
Thomas Muller will surely go down as one of Germany's all time greats. He was deadly in 2010, obliterating both England and Argentina, and then in 2014 he spearheaded Germany to a fourth World Cup.
He may not have been at his best recently, but what Muller brings is an ability to find space in the box and a knack of scoring goals. He is been a key asset to both Bayern Munich and Germany for the best part of a decade now, so he surely deserves his place in this combined XI.
11. LW: Antoine Griezmann
Playing on the left side of the front three is Antoine Griezmann. His pace, skill and trickery make him the perfect player to round off this combined XI. Despite standing at just 5ft 9in, Griezmann is also lethal in the air and became famed for his headers during Euro 2016.
Griezmann's selection means Marco Reus misses out. Reus has been a consistent performer for his beloved Borussia Dortmund, but has generally failed to perform on the international stage. Therefore, Griezmann nabs the final place in a side that would be a match for any team in world football.
