You Are Here: 🏠Home  »  Sports   »   Picking A Starting XI Of Current Players Who Graduated From The Man Utd Academy

Manchester United's prolific academy has fuelled the club for generations, with at least one home grown player in every since matchday squad without fail since October 1937.

But not only do United academy graduates fuel United, they also move on and perform for other clubs, with many making a name for themselves away from Old Trafford down the years.

Here's a look at a hypothetical XI made up exclusively of United academy graduates, both those still at the club and those who are now playing at a high level elsewhere...

1. GK - Tom Heaton

Current Club: Burnley

Still a United player until the age of 24 despite never playing a first team game, Tom Heaton played his way into the England squad after a stellar campaign for Burnley in 2016/17.

A cruel shoulder injury ruled him out of much of last season and cost him a chance to go to the World Cup in Russia. But Heaton is looking to take back his place this season as he has proven he is one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League on his day.

2. RB - Timothy Fosu-Mensah

Current Club: Fulham (on loan from United)

A loan to Crystal Palace last season after a handful of promising first team appearances for United might have represented something of a false dawn for Timothy Fosu-Mensah as a result of a tough start and a quick change of manager at Selhurst Park.

Now, the young Dutchman has a second chance at Fulham and has already earned rave reviews in action for the Cottagers that bode well for his United future.

3. CB - Gerard Pique

Current Club: Barcelona

United plucked Gerard Pique from Barcelona's famed La Masia academy as a 17-year-old, with the Spaniard playing at youth team before making the step up to the senior squad.

Pique briefly returned to Spain on loan in 2006//07 and then played 13 times for United the following season, which included scoring twice in the Champions League. He then left permanently to head back to Barcelona and has won countless major trophies.

4. CB - Michael Keane

Current Club: Everton

Michael Keane was an FA Youth Cup winner alongside twin brother Will with United in 2011 and was handed a first team debut by Sir Alex Ferguson less than a year later.

After a string of Football League loans, the centre-back made his Premier League debut under Louis van Gaal in 2014 against Burnley, joining the Clarets a few days later. It was at Turf Moor that he made his name and that led to a £25m move to Everton last summer.

5. LB - Robbie Brady

Current Club: Burnley

Versatile left-sided player Robbie Brady has played in the Premier League for Hull, Norwich and most recently Burnley, cruelly missing much of last season due to a serious knee injury.

Dublin-born Brady had arrived at United as a 16-year-old in 2008 after being spotted by scouts in his native Ireland. Back-to-back loans at Hull, either side of his sole United appearance, preceded a permanent exit to the Tigers in January 2013.

6. CM - Paul Pogba

Current Club: Manchester United

Having originally joined United as a 16-year-old from Le Havre in 2009, it took an £89m world record transfer to get former FA Youth Cup winner Paul Pogba back to Old Trafford after he had left to further his chances of first team football by joining Juventus.

Now a World Cup winner, the Frenchman is recognised as one of the best midfielders on the planet, although he is still yet to give his best on a consistent basis for United.

7. CM - Danny Drinkwater

Current Club: Chelsea

A United academy player from an early age, Danny Drinkwater shone with Leicester during the 2015/16 season as a crucial part of the Foxes' fairytale Premier League triumph.

It was United who sold the player to Leicester in 2012 after he'd gained first team experience on loans at Huddersfield, Cardiff, Watford and Barnsley. His career has unfortunately stalled after a huge £35m move to Chelsea last year that might have been overreaching.

8. AM - Jesse Lingard

Current Club: Manchester United

Jesse Lingard might be considered something of a late bloomer at United given that he didn't establish himself in the first team until a few weeks before celebrating his 23rd birthday.

Lingard, who first joined the club at the age of seven, was previously an FA Youth Cup winner alongside Pogba and saw his first senior opportunity killed by injury in a surprise start on the opening day of the 2014/15 season. But he has since become a key United player.

9. ST - Danny Welbeck

Current Club: Arsenal

The reaction was one of shock when local hero Danny Welbeck was allowed to leave United and join Arsenal on summer transfer deadline day in 2014, ending a lengthy association between the player and the club after first being spotted by scouts at the age of six.

Welbeck scored 24 United goals in three seasons as a first team regular and collected a Premier League winner's medal, but injury has massively hampered his career since leaving.

10. ST - Marcus Rashford

Current Club: Manchester United

It was an injury crisis that first catapulted Marcus Rashford into the spotlight in February 2016 when he made an unexpected debut at the age of 18, marking his first two senior United appearances with two astonishing braces in the space of only four days.

Rashford has since featured in more games that any other United player in each of the last two seasons and has recently inherited the club's famous number 10 shirt.

11. ST - Joshua King

Current Club: Bournemouth

Norwegian international Joshua King has developed something of a habit of scoring goals against United since arriving in the Premier League with Bournemouth, finding the net against his former club in both the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons.

Now at the start of his fourth top flight season, King, who made only two first team appearances for United in total, has scored 31 Premier League goals to date.

Honourable Mentions: Ron-Robert Zieler (Stuttgart), Jonny Evans (Leicester), James Chester (Aston Villa), Corry Evans (Blackburn), Tom Cleverley (Watford), Ravel Morrison (Lazio), Adnan Januzaj (Real Sociedad), Tom Lawrence (Derby), Giuseppe Rossi (Genoa)
