The Ministry of Power has revealed that since President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office on May 29, gas pipeline vandalism reduced considerably because of the adoption of constant engagement of the communities involved. As stated by him, contrary to the insinuation that power supply improved because of increased rains, the hydro power stations in Kainji and Shiroro contribute just about 20 per cent of the entire electricity and no substantial additions come from there. The Permanent Se‎cretary of the ministry, ‎Godknows Igali, disclosed this to State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, while fielding questions on what has been responsible for the recent improvement in electricity supply across the country. He said vandalism of gas pipelines was recurrent in the last days and months of the previous administration, and reached its peak on May 26 when gas-generated electricity was completely grounded. Igali said things however improved since then as the current administration has redoubled efforts at engaging communities where the pipelines pass through to allow peace to reign, which has resulted in increased gas supplies and improved power supply nationwide currently at 4,600 megawatts.
