26-year-old man jailed for escaping from police custody

The police in Obudu, Cross River State, have taken two men, Stephen Apebende and his friend into custody for allegedly taking snapshots of police officers with their mobile phones while extorting money from road users.

Recall that the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, had on his visit to Calabar reprimanded some commissioners of police for masterminding extortions from road users.

The confined men, who spent their Easter Sunday and Monday holidays at the police cell in Obudu Police Station, were apprehended along the Obudu Ranch Resort Road at the police checkpoint just before the residence of the Chief of Staff to Governor Ben Ayade, Mr. Martins Orim.

Report claimed on Friday that the officers were angry that Apebende and his friend had snapped them while squeezing money from road users.

The situation was further complicated after the policemen realised the photo album of the android and i-phone that was used by the men in capturing their images were not accessible to them, leading to the arrest of the duo.
