A cleaver-wielding man in south China was shot by police as he attempted to attack members of public at a market last Saturday.

Footage shows the police firing three bullets towards the man before capturing him.

The assailant's family claimed he had mental illness and was unclear of the reason of the attack.

As stated by guo Morning Post, the man grabbed a cleaver from a butcher in a supermarket at around 9pm on February 3.

The incident occured at Danzhu town, Ping county, Guigang of Guangxi Province.

A statement from Danzhu Police stated that, the man, surnamed Huang, was chasing people on the street with the cleaver and challenged the policeman to battle 'one-on-one'.

They were in a standoff for over five minutes before the man ran towards a nearby tea shop.

Officers then fired warning shots into the air before the attacker approached closer.

Video emerged online shows a policeman firing three bullets towards the man's lower body before capturing him.

It's said Huang was injured. His family told the police that he had mental illness in the past.

The incident is still under investigation.
