It's a happy birthday for the Porsche Boxster
Porsche has announced a series of major revisions to its entry-level, mid-engined roadster model, which includes a change of name to the 718 Boxster.
As it enters its 20th year, the 718 Boxster undergoes a number of changes, the most radical of which is a pair of new engines.
Gone is the traditional Porsche flat-six-cylinder unit, to be replaced by a pair of turbocharged four-cylinder powerplants (depending on model).
Porsche ight have jettisoned a couple of cylinders, however, this new engine is more powerful than its predecessor – and also more efficient.

18 Boxster S’s 2.5-litre variant pumps out 345bhp
The standard 718 Boxster model’s 2.0-litre engine now produces 296bhp – 25bhp more than the outgoing 2.7-litre engine – while the 718 Boxster S’s 2.5-litre variant pumps out 345bhp.
The extra power means that, unsurprisingly, both versions are quicker than before, too: the 718 Boxster shaves 0.8 seconds off the 0-62mph sprint time, now clocking in at 4.7 seconds (with the PDK automatic gearbox), while the 718 Boxster S managed the same acceleration test in just 4.2 seconds, which is 0.6 seconds faster than before.
Fitting a turbo to the smaller engines means that owners will also save time by not having to visit the petrol pump as regularly. The 718 Boxster’s fuel economy has risen 5.1mpg to 40.9mpg and the S version can return 38.7mpg (an increase of 4.3mpg).
