Jurgen Klinsmann will have a closer look at several talented youngsters before he chooses his final 23-man roster for the 2016 Copa American Centenario.
Christian Pulisic, Matt Miazga and Ethan Horvath were among the youngsters who were included in the 40-man preliminary roster for this summer's Copa America.
Veterans Michael Bradley, Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore, Geoff Cameron and Tim Howard are all on the preliminary roster, a group that lacked any truly surprising omissions or inclusions. Of the 40 players, only Horvath hasn't been in a U.S. senior national team camp before.
Klinsmann will have to cut down from 40 to 23 players by the May 20 deadline when final rosters are due.
Pulisic's inclusion comes as no real surprise given his emergence at German powerhouse Borussia Dortmund. The 17-year-old midfielder made his first appearance for the U.S. in the team's World Cup qualifying win against Guatemala in March, and he is considered a safe bet to make the final 23-man roster.
Miazga and Horvath were members of the U.S. Under-23 team that lost to Colombia in their Olympic qualifying playoff series, and both will have a tough task making the Copa America Centenario roster. But both defenders should be a part of the early camp in Miami, where they will try to impress Klinsmann enough to edge out veteran options at their positions.
The U.S. begins training camp on May 16, with non-MLS players convening in Miami for a week-long camp before a friendly against Puerto Rico on May 22. MLS-based players will join the U.S. camp after the MLS matches being played on the weekend of May 21-22. The friendly against Puerto Rico is one of three friendlies being played before Copa America.
The match will be the first of three warm-up games for the U.S. heading into the Copa America Centenario in June. Following the trip to Puerto Rico, the USA will face Ecuador on May 25 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas (7 p.m. CT; ESPN2 and UniMas) and Bolivia on May 28 at Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas (7 p.m. CT; FS1 and Univision networks).
