Real Madrid knocked Roma out of the Champions League on Tuesday but the Italian received a standing ovation from the home crowd in potentially his last Champions League game

Sergio Ramos paid tribute to Francesco Totti after the Roma legend swapped shirts with the Real Madrid captain after what could be the Italian's last ever Champions League game.

Totti came off the bench to a standing ovation from home and away fans as Madrid won 2-0 on Tuesday night to advance to the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Roma captain, who is 39 years old, approached Ramos in the Madrid dressing room after the game and the pair swapped shirts, which were later autographed, and the defender says he was honoured by the gesture.

"I liked Totti very much when I was younger and when the match was over he asked for my shirt and we swapped," he told reporters.

"Of course it is going to go to my museum. He is an example; 40 years old (sic) and still out there."

Totti, who has spent his entire career at the Stadio Olympico, could leave Roma at the end of the season when his contract expires after falling down the pecking order under Luciano Spalletti.
