FIA has confirmed that Red Bull Racing's 'Aeroscreen' could be introduced in 2018 if it is developed further.
RBR's solution to improve cockpit safety was presented soon after Ferrari unveiled its 'Halo' system that is utilizing a carbon fiber ring around the driver's head and a prominent vertical bar.

While the aeroscreen was better received by fans, Red Bull decided to cease development of it in order to allow it to fully focus on its 2017 car. Meanwhile, the halo was chosen by the FIA for use next year once it is developed fully.

At the Austrian Grand Prix, the Italian team presented 'Halo 2', an improved version that was used in a driver extraction test performed by local doctors and, while it took over 10 seconds for the driver to be extracted, FIA was happy with the progress presented.

Anyhow, whatever driver protection system is chosen, it will first have to pass a string of safety tests to ensure it is the optimal solution.
