Ex-minister of culture and tourism and a relentless critic of President Muhammadu Buhari, Femi Fani-Kayode, says ‘removing’ the 75-year-old leader will not solve Nigeria’s problems.

Fani-Kayode, a member of the major opposition party in Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), believes that having a credible and all-encompassing referendum is the best way to go.

The former minister came up with this assertion in a post on his Facebook wall on Saturday.

“Election fever has gripped our country and many want to be President. Some are serious contenders whilst others are not. Yet the truth is that our problems cannot be solved simply by a Presidential election,” he wrote

“It is a good start but it is not a cure all. We need to do far more than just electing a new President if we want lasting peace, if we want to flourish as a people and if we want to grow as a nation.

“Anyone that believes that removing Buhari alone will solve all our problems is naive and shortsighted. We need to go much further than that.

“The reality is that the problems of Nigeria can only be solved by having a credible and all-encompassing REFERENDUM and ensuring that our so-called federation is properly and thoroughly RESTRUCTURED. Anything short of that means we are simply postponing the evil day.

“Outside of that, whether it is Buhari or anyone else that is at the helm of affairs from next year, the very real challenges and fundamental problems that we are witnessing today as a nation will simply continue. May God grant us wisdom, understanding and foresight.”
