Members of the House of Representatives during a plenary
House of Representatives yesterday decried the delay in the completion of Jada Multipurpose Dam Project in Adamawa State, awarded Messrs Anbeez Services Ltd since 2010, and urged the Federal Government to ensure its immediate completion.
The total contract sum for the project, with a specified completion period of 36 months, according to the legislators, is N5.997 billion
Considering a motion on the need to urgently complete the dam project, brought by Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Abdulrazak Namdas, lawmakers urged the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, to include the contract in next year’s budget to avoid it being abandoned.
The 2017 budget proposal was yesterday laid before the joint session of the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari.
To ensure that the government complied with the directives, the representatives urged its committees on Water Resources and Appropriations to carry out a follow up and report back to members in eight weeks.
In his lead debate, Namdas regretted that the contractor had abandoned work at the site, 12 months after, after receiving N1.919 billion out of the total contract sum.
He said the contractor had done so with the excuse of non completion of the payments by the government.
He said if not stalled, the dam project would have met the domestic, agricultural and hydro power needs of the people of Mayo and its environs.
He listed construction of the dam, water supply scheme treatment and transmission, social and environmental impact assessment, irrigation scheme and hydro power as components of the contract.
