Los Blancos only have 16 months left to activate their buy-back clause, and should Juventus sell the forward to another club before then they will be compensated with €80 million
Alvaro Morata’s transfer to Juventus is the latest to be put under the microscope by Football Leaks, with details of the Spaniard’s contract revealing that Real Madrid only have a year left to activate their buy-back clause.
The Spain international moved to Turin in 2014 for a fee that has now been confirmed as €20 million (£15.7m), signing a five-year contract with the Bianconeri.
Madrid’s buy-back clause was widely reported at the time, but the latest leak from the whistle-blowing website shows that los Blancos’ option to bring the striker back to the Santiago Bernabeu only lasts until July 2017.
Should Madrid activate the clause, they would need to pay Juventus €30m (£23.5m) – though only if he has played more than 50 per cent of the Italian giants' matches, with the fee reducing relative to game time.
If Morata only plays between 25% and 50% of matches, the fee drops to €25m, and if he plays less than 25% of official matches for Juve, then Madrid would only need to pay the €20m they originally sold him for.
Incredibly, if Juve decide to sell Morata to another club before July 2017, they would have to compensate Madrid to the tune of €80m (£62.9m), which makes it highly unlikely that the 23-year-old will leave J-Stadium for any team other than Madrid over the next 18 months.
Morata, who left the Bernabeu after finding his first-team opportunities limited in the Spanish capital, had a strong debut season in Italy but has found the net just four times in Serie A this term.
