Katie Ledecky followed up her world-record swim in the 400-meter freestyle with a first-place finish in her heat in the 200-meter freestyle on Monday in Day 3 of the Rio Olympics.
Ledecky swam in lane 4 in the fifth heat. She finished in 1 minute, 55.01 seconds. to advance to the semifinals.
The 19-year-old won a world championship in the 200 freestyle in 2015 at Kazan, Russia. She did not compete in the event at the 2012 London Olympics.
Ledecky was just a few hours removed from breaking her own world record in the 400-meter freestyle. She won gold in 3 minutes, 56.46 seconds, smashing her previous mark of 3:58.37 set nearly two years ago.
Ledecky is also favored in the 800 free. In addition, she could pick up another gold in the 4x200 free relay.
Missy Franklin, Ledecky’s Team USA teammate, finished fourth in the previous heat.
