Here's a look at the seven biggest recipients of Football League Young Player of the Year, starting with the man of the hour...

7. Ryan Sessegnon - 2018

Many pundits and fans alike are calling for Sessegnon's name to be included in England's World Cup squad this summer.

It seems like the sky is the limit for this young prodigy and a move to a Premier League giant is expected soon.

6. Lewis Cook - 2016

A player whose star continues to rise, Lewis Cook is enjoying his breakout season in the English top flight with Bournemouth.

Cook was signed by the Cherries from Leeds United following his award winning season in the Championship in 2016.

After a summer where he captained the England Under-20s to a World Cup triumph in 2017, Cook quickly established himself in Bournemouth's first team where his growth as a midfield creator has not gone unnoticed.

Earlier this year Cook made his senior debut for England, coming off the bench in a friendly against Italy. His grandfather even pocketed a pretty penny in the process.

5. Wilfried Zaha - 2012

After a season where he scored nine league goals and recorded five assists, Wilfried Zaha was voted the Football League's Young Player of the Year in 2012.

Less than a year later, the Ivorian would earn a dream move to a Premier League giant with Manchester United.

He unfortunately failed to establish himself at Old Trafford and was shipped out on loan to Cardiff City the following season. He was be resigned by Crystal Palace after just two years and two league appearances for the Red Devils.

But the 25-year-old is still making waves in the Premier League, and a recent spell of good form has seen Zaha linked with the Premier League big boys once again. Manchester City and Tottenham are said to be keen, and links have also been reported from Arsenal and Chelsea.

4. Fabian Delph - 2009

Fabian Delph received his Young Player of the Year Award while playing in League One for his boyhood club Leeds United.

Arsenal, Newcastle United, and Tottenham were all reportedly eyeing Delph's performances at Leeds, but it was Aston Villa who made the breakthrough and signed the young midfielder in the summer of 2009.

Six years later, Delph made the surprise move to Manchester City for around £8m. It seemed like this move would hamper his progression with the midfielder looking destined to a bit part role at the Etihad.

But since the arrival of Pep Guardiola at City, Delph has managed to find a place in the squad by converting to left back to cover for the injured Benjamin Mendy. Delph started the majority of the games as City set a league record for most consecutive wins. He now has a Premier League winner's medal.

3. Nathaniel Clyne - 2010

After earning early acclaim in his career while at Crystal Palace, Nathaniel Clyne's top flight career started with Southampton when he signed for the Saints in 2012.

Three years later, Liverpool spent £12.5m to acquire the services of the English right back and quickly established himself in the first team at Anfield.

While still with the Saints, Clyne also made his international debut for England in 2014 and has earned 14 caps to date.

A season-long injury has kept him out of Liverpool's team this season and their formidable run in 2018, but the 27-year-old will be expected to pick up where he left off once he is fully fit.

2. Dele Alli - 2015

From League One with MK Dons to Premier League top six, it did not take long for Dele Alli to establish himself as one of England's hottest talents.

Alli was awarded the Football League Young Player of the Year in 2015 and was already bound for Tottenham Hotspur, having signed for the club for £5m in the January transfer window.

In his first two seasons in the Premier League, Alli scored 28 goals and earned back-to-back PFA Young Player of the Year awards.

While no stranger to controversy, Alli has proven his excellent ability as an attacking midfielder or second striker. He is now one of England's brightest players heading into the World Cup this summer.

1. Gareth Bale - 2007

The biggest name be awarded the Football League Young Player of the Year is now a bona fide Galactico - well, sort of.

Gareth Bale picked up the accolade at Southampton aged just 16 in his first full season as a professional footballer.

A left back by trade at that stage, Bale signed for Tottenham Hotspur that summer for £7m. The rest is pretty much history.

Six seasons at Spurs, one PFA Young Player of the Season, two PFA Players' Player of the Season and one Premier League Player of the Season later, Bale signed for Real Madrid in 2013 for a then world record fee of £85.3m.

Constant injuries have hampered his career in Spain and he has struggled to win the hearts of Madrid fans since joining the club. But 81 goals in 182 appearances and three Champions League titles is certainly nothing to be sniffed at, even if recent reports have linked him with a return to the Premier League.
