Armed robbers yesterday in Rivers State, attacked a cash van conveying an undisclosed amount of money along Akpajo axis of Port Harcourt, killing two mobile policemen, a cashier and a driver.
Based on what was gathered, the incident happened around 5pm, causing commotion within the area as the gunmen shot their victims at close range before carting away the cash.
The two mobile policemen were part of the escort when the incident occurred.
It was learnt that the van was coming out from a major beer distribution depot located on Akpajo axis of the East-West road before it was attacked few minutes later.
As stated by sources, the victims could not survive the attack because the bandit shot at them several times before leaving the scene of the incident.
The cash van was said to belong to a Port Harcourt-based company.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ahmad Mohammad, confirmed the incident and blamed the death of the policemen on negligence.
Mohammad said the “guiding rules” on specie escort was not properly followed.
He expressed the need for those who needed specie escort to make request for it from the command so that that policemen embarking on such exercise would be well equipped.
Mohammad added that investigation had since commenced with a view to apprehending those behind the dastardly act.
