A robbery suspect, Ahmed Adekeye who was arrested by the police on 2nd May 2015, has confessed that he implicated an innocent person, one Tunde Akambi. As stated by Adekeye, he implicated Akambi so that Akambi’s family would assist in freeing them. It was gathered that Adekeye was arrested at Imude, Ajamgbadi Area of Lagos State by a Neighbourhood Watch group following a failed robbery attempt. It was further bgathered that while five members of the gang escaped, Adekeye was arrested. The Neighbourhood Watch group later arrested Akambi after Adekeye allegedly identified him as a member of his gang. However, following discreet investigation, Adekeye confessed that he implicated Akambi because he did not want to die or suffer alone. Lagos State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu confirmed the arrest. Nwosu, a Deputy superintendent of Police (DSP) said the suspect would be charged to court as soon as investigation is completed. Meanwhile, the Akambi who was falsely accused and implicated has been released. Confessing to the crime, Adekeye said, “Please tell Akambi to forgive me because it was devil who made me implicate him. I did not want to suffer alone. I was the only person arrested, we were six in number. I thank God that I saw o/c SARS SP Abba Kyari with my eyes and I am still alive. I have been in many police stations but this is my first time of being in SARS cell.” The suspect said “I was arrested for armed robbery on the 2nd of May, 2015. We were six in number namely myself, Ahamed, Aloma, Tunde, Lekan, Biodun and one Ahmed. We planned it at about 9pm on 1st of May and carried out the operation at about 1:30am the following day, being Saturday May 2, 2015. I was arrested same day. I was arrested at a bus stop. I am from Iwo Village, Isi Local Government Area, Kwara State… “One of my friends called Aloma, a shoe maker based at Suru Alaba, called me on phone to come and meet him at Ilogbo, Ajamgbadi side around 9:30pm. I met them in an Indian hemp smoking joint there. They were five that I met there. They went and brought three cutlass and three wooden batons. I took one of the wooden batons. Then we went to Orisa Street, Imude and stayed in an uncompleted building at about 10:00pm. At about 1:30pm, we went to the victim’s house, a self contained room and parlour with kitchen and toilet. There are four self contained room and parlours there. We broke the door of one of the self contained there while one of us called Aloma used cutlass to cut the head of the owner of the house. The man (tet) shouted which attracted neighbours and vigilante group. When tets started shouting Ole! Ole!! Ole!!!, Thief! Thief!! Thief!!!. “We ran to different directions. I ran to Mile 2. It was the shouting of other tets that attracted vigilante and members of National Union of Road Transport Services (Workers). They asked me the name of my gang members which I gave them. Maybe, that was why they went to the market and arrested Tunde. When we were handed over to Police Station I still insisted that Tunde is one of us. Even when I was writing statement they asked me whether I know Tunde and I said yes. We were there four days later transferred to SARS. When they transferred me to SARS I still insisted that Tunde is one of us because I did not want to go down alone since others escaped.” Meanwhile, Tunde Akambi said he has accepted Adekeye’s apology.
