Fresh facts have emerged on Saturday on how the armed robbers who invaded Ikirun area of Ifelodun local government in Osun state made attempts to blow up the Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC) belonging to the Osun police command during the attack.
Based on what was gathered, the robbers numbering more than 15 had arrived at the venue operation, fully prepared for the expected counter attack by men of the Osun anti-robbery squad.
The Public Relations Officer of the Police Command, Mrs. Folashade Odoro, confirmed that one of the armed robbers had a specific duty to ensure the use of explosives to blow up the police APC knowing that this was the only way the operation could be successful.
In confusion that ensued when the armed robbers laid their siege on the bank, men of the Osun special anti-robbery squad had arrived with their APC apparently battle ready for the robbers.
The robbers who was assigned the duty of blowing up the APC was allegedly stationed a distance where he was to gain a vantage distance from where he was to discharge the explosives to blow up the APC.
As stated by Eeye witness account, before the man with the explosives could act, he was spotted by one of the policemen who shot him in the head.
The explosive was also stated to have been detonated cutting one of the legs of the armed robber.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Security on Hon Tope Adejumo, told a correspondent that it was not surprising that despite the attack on the APC, the robbers were unable to succeed.
“That is a strong warning that Osun is a no go area for criminals from any part of Nigeria. That shows you that the have studied Osun’s heavy investment in security and they felt that by demobilising the APC, their operation would be carried out with ease. But they failed. Osun remains impossible for them to penetrate.”
