The Toffees could be set for a cash injection following negotiations with a group led by John Jay Moores - the former owner of the San Diego Padres baseball team

Everton are edging closer to a £200 million takeover as talks with an American consortium continue to progress, according to the BBC.

The group are led by John Jay Moores, the former owner of the San Diego Padres baseball team, and have been in negotiations with Toffees chairman Bill Kenwright for several months.

Moores, who had previously been interested in taking over Swansea City, is said to have spent the last six weeks looking through Everton's accounts with his fellow investors.

The takeover would boost Everton's spending power in the transfer market, with their finances also set to be boosted by the new Premier League television rights deal.
