Pressure on the Dutch coach is increasing as the season goes on and there are calls from within the club's hierarchy to have his assistant or the former Chelsea boss replace him
Manchester United's board is split between over the future of manager Louis van Gaal, with some members desperate to see him stay while there is also support for him to be replaced by Jose Mourinho or Ryan Giggs, according to the The Daily Star Sunday.
The Dutch coach has been lingering towards the exit over the course of the season as the club's fans grow increasingly disillusioned with the team's playing style and poor results.
Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Southampton sees speculation over the 64-year-old's future increase and it has left the United hierarchy in turmoil.
The newspaper reports executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward hopes the current boss remains in charge for the remainder of the season at least, while some believe it is time to hand first-team duties to his assistant Giggs.
Meanwhile, at least one member is hoping to see Mourinho, who has long courted the Old Trafford job, be the one to succeed Van Gaal.
