SAN DIEGO — Daniel Murphy, Terry Collins and Tim Teufel expressed their support for Mets general manager Sandy Alderson and his fight against cancer.
During Tuesday’s All-Star Game, all three held placards bearing Alderson’s name during a break in the action to recognize the Stand Up 2 Cancer initiative.
“The Stand Up 2 Cancer moment was special to me and thousands of other cancer patients who appreciate the support of their families, friends and colleagues,” Alderson told Newsday in an email. “Terry, Tim and Murph are friends and colleagues (or former colleague in Murph’s case), but they all feel like family.”
Murphy, the longtime Met in his first season with the Nationals, said chose to honor Alderson after Mets PR man Jay Horwitz mentioned the GM’s ongoing battle.
“It seemed fitting,” said Murphy, who last saw Alderson when the Mets GM delivered last season’s National League championship ring. “He’s never far from my family’s thoughts.”
Throughout the season, Collins has marveled at Alderson’s ability to remain on the job, despite enduring treatment, which included chemotherapy and a surgery in May.
“Sandy Alderson means a lot to us as people, guys that have been around him, to the organization,” Collins said. “We’re around him. We see the passion, the strength and the courage.”
The Mets announced Alderson’s diagnosis last winter, and as recently as two months ago, he said he’s on course for a full recovery.
“I’m doing very well,” said on Tuesday.
