Scott Mayfield agreed to a two-year contract with the Islanders on Tuesday for an average annual value of $625,000. The 23-year-old defenseman received a one-way contract as he’s no longer waiver-exempt, throwing him into the crowded mix among the Isles’ defense corps.
Mayfield was the 34th overall pick in 2011 and has one goal in 11 games with the Isles over three pro seasons spent mostly in Bridgeport. He also played two playoff games with the Isles in the 2015 postseason.
The Islanders now have six defensemen — Johnny Boychuk, Nick Leddy, Travis Hamonic, Thomas Hickey, Calvin de Haan and Mayfield — on one-way deals, with Adam Pelech and Ryan Pulock also very much in the mix for NHL jobs with both players still on their entry-level contracts.
Forwards Ryan Strome and Alan Quine are the only remaining restricted free agents who have not signed.
McPhee to Vegas. A league source confirmed reports that George McPhee, the former Caps general manager who served last season as a special adviser to Garth Snow, will be named as the inaugural GM of the new Las Vegas franchise at a news conference on Wednesday.
McPhee, 58, was Washington’s GM from 1997-2014. He joined the Isles as an unofficial scout during the 2014-15 season — McPhee was Snow’s agent when Snow turned pro as a goaltender — and then fully came on board last season.
Las Vegas will join the NHL in 2017-18 after an expansion draft to be held in June.
